Heavenly Heuchera

Heavenly Heuchera

Heuchera are evergreen shade perennials beloved for their beautiful foliage, color and shape.   Also known as Coral Bells, their colors range from lime, red, burgundy, chocolate brown, purple,  green, silver and more.  The leaves are often large and heart-shaped, wavy or rounded, and many are variegated or ruffled.  They have tall airy stems of tiny, delicate clusters of blooms in white, pink or red that bloom in spring and summer.  Their foliage introduces year-round color to a garden even in the dreary days of winter. They are great as an accent in a shade or semi-shade bed and stunning used as a swath, as well as in pots.  Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are most attracted to Heuchera with vibrant red or pink flowers.  They range in size from 12 to 36 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide.

Heuchera thrive in rich, well-draining soil and tolerate mild sun to full shade, but are best protected from the late afternoon sun.   Heuchera are tolerant of heat, cold, humidity and drought. They need moderate to little water when established.  Remove spent flower spikes and trim back damaged foliage as needed.  Fertilize in spring and divide clumps every 3-4 years.  They are considered to be deer and disease resistant.
